Abuse

Both children and adults can become victims of abuse. Abuse occurs in the form of sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, domestic violence, mental abuse, dating violence, stalking and in other ways. Victims of abuse and other crimes are left feeling afraid, isolated, and hopeless. Adults who have been abused often experience a multitude of problems beyond the physical impact. Flashbacks, anxiety, sleep problems, crippling fear, feeling numb, depression, thoughts of suicide, and increased substance use are common symptoms that may occur after abuse.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can be beneficial in some situations. However, there are times when anxiety can start to interfere with life, making it difficult to function on a day-to-day basis. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 19.8% of the population every year.

Behavior Problems

Behavior is an action or reaction to the environment or to internal thoughts and emotions. Behavioral symptoms are persistent or repetitive behaviors that are unusual, disruptive, inappropriate, or cause problems. Aggression, criminal behavior, defiance, drug use, hostility, inappropriate sexual behavior, inattention, secrecy, and self-harm are examples of behavioral symptoms.

Behavioral Modification is a method used to replace negative behavior patterns with desired behaviors or promote behavior change.  Life is packed with situations or environments you can’t control.  There are a million different factors affecting who you are and how you behave.  Instead of focusing on negative thinking patterns or ideas, behavior modification focuses on sequences of behavior to help alter actions that lead to specific outcomes.

Depression

Depression is a common but serious mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Depression can affect how you feel, think, and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn’t worth living. Depression may occur only once during your life, but some people typically experience multiple episodes. Symptoms that occur may include: crying spells, weight gain or loss, feelings of worthlessness, difficulty concentrating, anger outbursts, and fatigue.

Family & Marital Problems

Every relationship will experience issues and pressure at one point or another. It can be frustrating, painful, and lonely when you hit a rough patch in your relationship. Even if you started with a strong foundation, life can get in the way. Family therapy has been used successfully to treat many different types of families in many different situations. Some examples of problems that may be helped with family therapy are:

  • Marital or couples conflict
  • Financial stress or career changes
  • Loss of a child
  • One family member having a mental illness, such as a substance use problem or depression

Periods of stress brought on by life’s inevitable challenges can strain your relationship and disrupt the connection you once had. It’s possible to overcome even the most difficult times in your relationship.

Substance Abuse

There are 9.5 million adults over the age of 18 that both have a substance disorder and a mental illness.  Substance abuse is a pattern of drug use that leads to significant problems such as failure to attend work or school, using the substance in dangerous situations, such as driving a car. Some people can use alcohol and even other drugs in a recreational way and not have substantial negative consequences. For many others, the use of alcohol and drugs becomes a devastating and debilitating problem that is very difficult to handle. It may lead to substance-related legal problems, or continued substance use that interferes with friendships, family relationships, or both.

Trauma

Roughly 70% of adults will experience some type of traumatic experience at least once in their lives.  Traumatic experiences come in many forms and it is not possible to list all the ways someone may experience trauma in their lives. Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, combat, or witnessing a death and illness. Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer-term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea.

Group

We offer many different types of group therapy: Psychoeducational, skills development, cognitive-behavioral, and interpersonal process groups.  Group therapy focuses on a specific mental health concern, and will bring people who share those concerns and experiences together.

Business Hours

Union Mission Behavioral Health Center offers dual sessions for the morning and the evening hours. 

There will be shifts for Union Mission employees that include morning, afternoon, and some evenings for those that work. 

We offer telehealth and face-to-face sessions to best fit the client’s needs. 

We operate 5 days a week, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with telehealth services offered on an individual basis, including group on Thursdays from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm and individuals from 5:30 to 6:30 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.


Telehealth is the distribution of health-related services and information via electronic information and telecommunication technologies.  It allows long-distance patient and clinician contact, care, advice, reminders, education, intervention, monitoring, and remote admissions.
